Calming Your Dog During a Storm With the Anxiety Wrap For Dogs   by Karleen Lindsey

During the many years I have had the pleasure of working with dogs, I have been faced with numerous different types and levels of anxiety in dogs. There are countless directions to turn to in helping your dog overcome out-of-control hyperactive behavior. One possible means of calming your dog is to use an anxiety or body wrap for dogs, which I will delve into in this article.

One type of stress is due to having an expectation of pain, such as the anxiety brought on by the fear of nail clippers, possibly due to having a nail clipped too short at some time causing pain.

There is also a type of anxiety over being left alone, also known as separation anxiety. There can be several degrees of this anxiety, from continuous pacing, panting and barking to destroying furniture, doors and even walls trying to find and regroup the “pack”.

Loud storms can precipitate hysteria in otherwise calm dogs to the magnitude of sending them blindly crashing through windows, burrowing in dark closets, panting, trembling and lost within their terror or even running blindly for miles.

Being confined in a moving vehicle may also bring on irrational stress in dogs, possibly because a previous car ride was traumatic. They might have been injured in an accident at some point. That’s why crating a dog in a vehicle is always a good safety measure.

Why a dog reacts with irrational anxiety to a certain event is really not as vital as finding a way to help your dog overcome that debilitating fear.

One method of calming a dog during an irrational hyperactive state is by using a tool called an anxiety wrap for dogs or body wrap. The principle leading to this method has been publicly documented in great depth by Temple Grandin, who developed a “hug box” using the same idea of calming pressure on the body. Throughout her early years of living with autism, Temple could not tolerate being touched, yet while visiting her aunt’s ranch as a teen-ager she noticed how calm a cow was while being handled in the confines of a squeeze chute. She decided to invent a similar safe confinement for herself. Temple found that the deep touch pressure of the box on her body actually calmed her. She also found that her over-reactive senses were then focused to a plateau that was manageable.

This concept of exerting deep pressure on the nervous system to produce a calming effect is manifested in the anxiety wrap for dogs. This holistic approach to behavior modification is a healthy way to avoid sedatives. It can help in easing your dog’s irrational fear in most situations, including panic over thunder and lightening and separation anxiety.

It is extremely essential that when ordering any kind of anxiety wrap you get an accurate measurement of your dog in order to receive the desired results. Fitting the wrap too tightly will only make your dog uncomfortable and irritated. If it is too loose, it could also make your dog irritated and not have enough deep touch pressure to have a calming effect. So being painstaking in the measurement of your dog is critical. The way to do this is by measuring your dog in a standing position around the fullest part of the ribcage, usually the girth area, with a measuring tape that is either cloth or vinyl. Pull it snug, but not too tight, and don’t estimate the measurement. Be exact in your measuring.

The anxiety wrap for dogs is a great tool to help your dog achieve balance, focus, self-confidence, and relaxation. However, it will not work for every dog in every situation, just as nothing will work in every capacity for a total population of people or animals. You may also notice that it does not altogether cure your dog’s irrational panic, but may subdue it to a manageable degree. It also may take a few uses of the wrap to acquire its full effect. Many dogs will be calmed almost instantly. Some take a little longer to experience the desired calming effect and a few don’t seem to benefit at all by the body shirt.

The idea is to find and use whatever healthy methods you can to try and help your dog overcome its unwarrented fear and anxiety. If this just doesn’t seem to an effective tool for your dog, there are other things you can try such as canine massage therapy, desensitizing your dog to its greatest object of fear, herbal remedies, just to name a few.

What’s important is that you seek out a way to help your dog lessen its response to the anxiety issues that are causing stress not only for your dog, but also for your family. Trying something such as an anxiety wrap for dogs may be a very affordable way to ease both you and your dog’s anxiety level and readjusting your dog back to a healthy state of well-being.
